• Origin: Native to central Mexico, traditionally grown for its edible sour pitaya (xoconostle).
• Growth Habit: Multi-stemmed cactus that forms large clumps, reaching 3–5 meters tall in maturity.
• Stems: Cylindrical, 6–12 cm thick, with 5–8 ribs and short, gray-brown spines.
• Flowers: White to pinkish, opening at night and pollinated by bats.
• Fruit: Round red to purple xoconostle, with tangy, refreshing pulp used in drinks, salsas, and traditional dishes in Mexico.
